The Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Plant has been shut down since May 2024 due to an obstruction in its headrace tunnels. To address this issue, the Prime Minister has formed a committee to investigate the causes of the obstruction and implement the recommendations of the WAPDA committee.¹
The plant, which began operations in 2018, has generated approximately 20 billion units of electricity. However, the shutdown has resulted in a complete halt in power production. The Ministry of Water Resources has informed Parliament that the plant’s closure has led to a significant loss of electricity generation.
The Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Plant is a complex project featuring a 68-kilometer-long tunnel system. To identify the causes of the obstruction, the tunnel’s water has been drained, and debris is being removed.
